The first blog in this diary is the result of a year long obsession with an issue the County where I live is facing. The issue spawned numerous blogs and webpages dedicated to the topic. There are now parody blogs, youtube videos, online petitions - all from a variety of sources. The power of the internet is alive and well.
Online phenomenons are abundant on the internet. From the dancing guy to lonelygirl, you don’t have to look far to find an internet sensation. Case in point - our local newspaper is infamous for their comment section. I myself have been banned from posting which is what spurred my blog, but that doesn’t stop me from reading the posts. The posts are often peppered with extreme ideas, humorous comments and inside information. They post the most commented on articles in a separate section making it easy to see where the community concerns lie.
I noticed the other day an article with just over 600 comments…the most I had ever seen! It was to warn people about a pyramid scam taking in locals called the Circle of Sisters. I had to take a look. As it turns out, the article itself was quite mundane. The comments were much more interesting, a common occurrence in our local paper.
Somewhere around comment #72 the discussion turned a corner and became its own entity evolving into a comedic and entertaining read for me. I was hooked. Now up to 653 posts the comments had a life of their own. The hook became simply keeping the comments going for as long as possible. Savvy bloggers even realized early on the importance of paying homage to their provider and devised a plan to click through on ads…a by-product every webmaster reveres.
Who needs digital television ….Just find a great comment thread, sit back and enjoy…you may even get to know your neighbors.
